Catalyst 8500/LightStream 1010 12.1(5)EY Release Feature List

Introduction

This product bulletin describes the new features introduced with the Catalyst® 8500/LightStream® 1010 12.1(5)EY12.1(5)EY release. New features include the introduction of new hardware and software functionality for the Catalyst 8500/LightStream 1010 Family which consists of either Catalyst 8540 or Catalyst 8510/LightStream 1010 platforms. All hardware and software features apply to both the MSR and CSR images, unless a particular image is specifically stated.

New Features

Catalyst 8540 MSR:

ATM Router Module II

•RFC 1483 PVC and SVC (ATM Adaptation Layer 5 [AAL5]: Logical Link Control [LLC] / SubNetwork Attachment Point [SNAP] and MUX encapsulation)

•RFC 1577 PVC and SVC

•ACL support for IP (standard and extended) & IPX (standard)

•Jumbo frame support of a maximum transmit unit (MTU) of 9K bytes

•IP fragmentation support

•OAM-based PVC management

Catalyst 8500 family and LightStream 1010:

On-line/Power-on Diagnostics - Additional software enhancements are available on the Catalyst 8540 platform, including the following:

•On-line Insertion and Removal (OIR) diagnostics

•Switch Card (SWC) bus / Port Adaptor Module (PAM) bus accessibility

•Snake loopback test at power-on

•Enhanced Power-on Diagnostics

•

PAgP - New software features are available on the Catalyst 8540 platform, including the following:

•Point-to-point ports/interfaces aggregated into an agport

•Dynamic change of an agport as interfaces fail/heal

•Composition and statistics on the agport and its members (Full MIBs)

•Automatic avoid delay/disruption through IEEE 802.1D standard

•Detect, report, and prevent unidirectional point-to-point interfaces

•Detect report, and prevent incorrectly paired bidirectional point-to-point interfaces
